Dan White’s India

The health and safety of students, faculty, staff and community friends remains UNC Charlotte’s top priority. The University has been monitoring the rapidly evolving situation around coronavirus (COVID-19) and has been working in close collaboration with local and state resources.

After careful thought and consideration, UNC Charlotte has decided to cancel Dan White’s India, Dr. White’s photo exhibit was to be held in Atkins library from March 20 through April 10, 2020. This was not an easy decision, but a necessary one in protecting the health and well-being of our campus community.

The exhibit will be rescheduled in late August of 2020.

Dr. White was a gifted and talented teacher, passionate student of India, Baptist minister, hymnist, scholar, photographer, and defender of the vulnerable. He was opinionated, generous and kind. Dr. White would often say, “There are no wrong answers, but some answers are better than others.”

A lucky few called him mahaguru and steady friend.

Dan’s unique collection of photos, taken during his early travels to South Asia, portray India as it existed in the mid-twentieth century. Much has changed since then, but the essential elements of the human condition revealed in Dan’s photos persist into the twenty-first century in India and beyond.

The Religious Studies Department invites you to view and contemplate these architectural masterpieces, haunting portraits, and amusing moments.
